World Cup-winning former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has taken over as the new president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). This appointment marks a significant step for the iconic player, known for his excellence in both cricket and amateur golf. The 65-year-old, who previously served as the PGTI Board’s vice-president, was chosen unanimously to succeed H.R. Srinivasan, whose term has concluded.
Kapil Dev, a passionate golfer with a handicap once close to scratch, expressed his honor in accepting the presidency. He emphasized the strong bond he shares with the PGTI players, whom he considers close friends and frequent golfing partners. Recalling his own golfing aspirations, he shared how he dreamt of representing India at the Asian Games during a time when only amateurs were eligible. Golf, he asserts, has been a passion for over three decades, consuming most of his time outside of cricket. He acknowledged the players’ trust in electing him as president and pledged to dedicate his best efforts, as he always has. He added that this new role provides him with immense satisfaction, allowing him to spend more time with his golfing companions and enjoy the game he loves.
Kapil Dev’s commitment to the sport is evident in his efforts to secure sponsorships for the PGTI. He successfully brought in one of the most lucrative events to the Tour – the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational at the DLF Golf and Country Club, offering a prize purse of Rs 2 crore. His celebrity status and passion for golf have earned him invitations to prestigious events like the Dunhill Links, where he played alongside global celebrities.
He believes golf is a remarkable sport that can be enjoyed at any age, emphasizing its relaxing nature. While his dedication to cricket remains strong, he finds solace and leisure on the golf course. His desire to serve the sport drives him to elevate golf to new heights, drawing on his passion and experience. India’s top golfers, including Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, and many others, are his close golfing friends.
Kapil Dev’s legacy in cricket is unparalleled. He represented India from 1978 to 1994, solidifying his place among the greatest all-rounders of all time. His 131 Test matches and 225 one-dayers include leading India to the 1983 World Cup victory. His unforgettable 175 not out in the 1983 World Cup is considered one of the greatest innings in cricketing history. In Tests, he amassed 5248 runs, including eight centuries, and claimed 434 wickets, a world record at the time. He also achieved remarkable success in ODIs, scoring 3783 runs and taking 253 wickets. With his passion for golf now taking center stage, Kapil Dev’s journey promises to bring new excitement and growth to the sport in India.
