Securing a remarkable 1,066 votes, Sibal comfortably defeated his closest rival, Pradeep Rai, who garnered 689 votes. This triumph marks the fourth time that the veteran lawyer will serve as the head of the SCBA.

Sibal’s election to the presidency is a testament to his extensive experience in the legal field and his dedication to the bar. A Harvard Law School graduate, Sibal previously served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1989 to 1990. His contributions to the legal profession have been widely recognized, and he was designated as a senior advocate in 1983.

Prior to this latest victory, Sibal had already held the position of SCBA President on three separate occasions. His most recent term ended twenty-three years ago in 2001. His tenure as President during the 1995-96 and 1997-98 terms was marked by significant achievements and contributions to the association.

The SCBA, which represents over 14,000 lawyers practicing before the Supreme Court of India, plays a crucial role in upholding the rights and privileges of its members. Sibal’s election to the presidency is expected to bring about positive changes and initiatives for the SCBA. His extensive experience and commitment to the bar will undoubtedly benefit the association and its members.

The SCBA elections were held on May 16th, with the counting of votes taking place on May 18th. The official results were declared on May 19th, confirming Sibal’s victory. The smooth conduct of the elections is a testament to the SCBA’s commitment to democratic principles and transparency.

As Sibal embarks on his fourth term as SCBA President, he will be assisted by a team of dedicated office bearers. Adish Aggarwala, the immediate past President, will continue to serve as a guiding force, while Rohit Pandey will resume his duties as the Honorary Secretary. The newly elected Executive Committee also includes several prominent advocates who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.

The SCBA remains committed to fulfilling its mission of serving the legal community and upholding the rule of law. With Kapil Sibal at the helm, the association is well-positioned to navigate the challenges ahead and continue playing a vital role in shaping the legal landscape of India.
