Karnataka is gearing up to transform its beach tourism landscape, drawing inspiration from the vibrant and successful model of Goa. The state’s Tourism Department is considering a series of changes, including the introduction of beach shacks, the allowance of alcohol consumption on beaches, and extended beach access hours, all aimed at attracting a larger influx of tourists.
Rajendra KV, the Director of the Karnataka Tourism Department and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), has confirmed that these developments are likely to be incorporated into the upcoming tourism policy. He believes these changes are crucial to making Karnataka’s beaches more appealing to visitors, mirroring the success of Goa’s beach tourism scene.
The decision comes after stakeholders, including travel, tourism, and hospitality businesses in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, expressed their desire for relaxed restrictions on beach timings and alcohol consumption. Their feedback, shared during the ‘Connect 2024’ interactive session hosted by the Department of Tourism and Karnataka Tourism Society, has spurred the department’s action.
In addition to the changes aimed at attracting visitors, the department is also prioritizing safety enhancements. Rajendra announced plans to increase the number of streetlights on beaches to encourage nighttime visits and ensure a safe environment for tourists. He also instructed district officials to identify suitable government and private land for promoting tent tourism across the state, further expanding accommodation options for travelers.
To streamline the process of setting up tourism projects, the tourism department will soon establish a facilitation center. This center will provide guidance and assistance to entrepreneurs seeking Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) approvals and other necessary clearances for their projects.
Addressing concerns regarding beach access hours, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan MP highlighted that, following the state government’s decision to extend business hours for shops, restaurants, and other licensed establishments, visitors in Mangaluru city are currently allowed on beaches until 1 a.m. However, he acknowledged that further discussions with the police are needed to clarify why beach access is still restricted after 9 p.m.
These planned changes signal a significant shift in Karnataka’s tourism strategy. The department’s proactive approach, fueled by stakeholder feedback and a commitment to safety, suggests a determined effort to make Karnataka’s beaches a more attractive destination for tourists, potentially mirroring Goa’s success in drawing visitors from across the country and beyond.
