Karpowership, a prominent international energy company renowned for its innovative solutions, has declared its intention to invest a substantial $1 billion in LNG-to-Power infrastructure in Mozambique. This groundbreaking project, set to benefit the entire Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), holds the potential to not only significantly improve Mozambique’s domestic energy landscape but also deliver dependable and cost-effective electricity to 5 million individuals within the SAPP region.
This new initiative will mirror Karpowership’s existing successful project in Brazil, featuring a cutting-edge natural gas-powered facility with a capacity reaching 500 MW. The facility will comprise one of the world’s largest Powerships and a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU). This latest venture expands upon Karpowership’s existing partnership with Mozambique, which began in 2016 with the provision of 115 MW of reliable electricity to landlocked Zambia. By harnessing Mozambique’s domestic gas resources, this project presents significant opportunities for both the nation and the wider region.
The project offers the potential to provide a reliable energy source for Mozambique’s own electricity utility company, Electricidade de Mozambique (EdM), or for export to public and private entities in neighboring countries within the SAPP region, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and others. Karpowership’s collaboration with EdM on Mozambique’s domestic power supply has already witnessed substantial progress. Currently, the company supplies electricity through its Powership operating in Nacala Bay, contributing to the country’s energy security and economic growth since 2018.
The company recently showcased one of its state-of-the-art Powerships, identical to the one planned for this new venture, at the Port of Maputo, providing attendees with an insight into their fast, flexible power solution. “Karpowership is proud to serve as a committed partner to Mozambique, and we are thrilled to be deepening that relationship, creating a vehicle together that will power the wider region from Mozambique—addressing regional electricity deficits and enhancing economic activity,” remarked Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, Karpowership’s Chief Operating Officer.
The new investment is also poised to generate a significant influx of direct and indirect job opportunities, with potential for collaboration between the company and both the public and private sectors. Karpowership remains steadfast in its commitment to driving sustainable energy solutions and contributing to the socio-economic development of Mozambique and the broader SAPP region. This latest investment reaffirms the company’s dedication to supporting regional growth and energy security.
