Kashmir Shivers: Chillai Kalan Brings Coldest December in 5 Decades

Kashmir Freezes: Chillai Kalan Brings Coldest December in Five Decades

Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, has arrived, ushering in frigid temperatures and the potential for significant snowfall. Srinagar experienced its coldest December night in 50 years, plummeting to a bone-chilling -8.5 degrees Celsius. This significant drop in temperature is a hallmark of Chillai Kalan, a period known for its extreme weather conditions.

Freezing Temperatures Across Kashmir Valley

The intense cold wasn’t limited to Srinagar. Minimum temperatures across the Kashmir Valley dipped well below freezing. Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination and base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of -8.6 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, the famed ski resort, saw temperatures drop to -6.2 degrees Celsius. The freezing temperatures caused the partial freezing of the Dal Lake and disrupted water supply in several areas.

Weather Forecast: Dry Spells and Potential Snowfall

The meteorological department has issued a forecast predicting mainly dry weather for Kashmir until December 26. However, light snowfall is anticipated in the higher reaches of the valley on the night of December 21-22. Further light snowfall is also possible in higher elevations from the afternoon of December 27 to the morning of December 28. A cold wave is expected to persist in isolated areas for the coming days. While the weather is predicted to be mainly dry on December 29-30, another round of light snowfall is anticipated in the higher reaches on New Year’s Eve.

Chillai Kalan and its Aftermath

Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21st, will continue until January 31st. The extreme cold, however, doesn’t end there. It’s followed by the 20-day Chillai-Khurd (small cold) and the 10-day Chillai-Bachha (baby cold), ensuring the region remains firmly in winter’s grip for an extended period.

Winter Tourism in Kashmir

Despite the freezing temperatures, Kashmir transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland during this time. The snow-covered landscapes and frozen lakes provide a unique and stunning spectacle, attracting tourists who seek the thrill of experiencing a magical winter adventure. For those who love snow, this is the perfect opportunity to witness the beauty of Kashmir in its winter glory, adding to its reputation as a paradise on Earth.

Impact of Extreme Cold

The extreme cold poses challenges for local residents. It affects transportation, daily routines, and can lead to health problems. Authorities take steps to mitigate the impact of these severe weather conditions by providing necessary assistance to those in need and ensuring essential services remain operational as much as possible. This is a crucial time for preparedness and ensuring the safety and well-being of the population.
