Bananas are a staple fruit for many, but their short shelf life can be frustrating. While they may stay ripe for up to four days in cooler weather, warmer temperatures drastically reduce this time. While brown bananas are great for banana bread, it’s annoying when they discolour so quickly. Fortunately, experts have shared tips to extend their life, even up to 14 days!
Many people keep bananas on the kitchen counter, in a fruit bowl, or hanging to preserve freshness. However, according to food expert Kate Hall, founder of The Full Freezer, storing them in the refrigerator can significantly extend their use by date, by as much as 11 days. Once your bananas reach the desired color, simply place them in the fridge, away from other fruits.
Hall also recommends freezing overripe bananas for later use. Simply peel them and freeze them to add to smoothies, defrost for banana bread, or even make banana ice cream.
Professional baker and chef Sarah Bridenstine emphasizes the unique storage needs of bananas for optimal longevity. She suggests bagging green bananas to speed up ripening as the emitted gases accelerate the process. Once ripe, refrigeration is key to slowing down over-ripening and preventing browning.
Bridenstine explains that bananas release a significant amount of gas that can prematurely ripen nearby fruits, so it’s essential to store them separately. Overripe bananas, however, are a baker’s treasure, perfect for bread, smoothies, and even sugar. Don’t waste them!
Other fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and grapes should also be kept in the refrigerator. However, it’s crucial to avoid storing them near onions or garlic as they can spoil the fruit.
