Bread is a staple in most kitchens, but its short shelf life can be frustrating. While it may seem like the fridge is the ideal place to keep bread fresh, it’s actually one of the worst. Professional chef Mairym Monti Carlo explains why storing bread in the fridge can cause it to go stale and moldy faster.
The culprit is the plastic packaging. Plastic traps moisture, creating an environment that promotes mold growth. Instead, Mairym recommends using beeswax wraps, which allow the bread to breathe while still maintaining moisture. Beeswax wraps are a more natural and eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags or cling film.
To ensure your bread stays fresh, keep it at room temperature, but avoid storing it on your kitchen counter near appliances like microwaves or air fryers. The heat from these appliances can accelerate mold growth. The best place to store bread is in a dark, cool place like a kitchen cabinet away from direct sunlight, which can cause the bread to dry out.
Properly stored bread can stay fresh for around 5 to 7 days, depending on the type. However, for longer storage, freezing is the best option. According to Mairym, freezing bread in its plastic bag prevents texture changes and keeps it fresh for up to three months.
Reviving Stale Bread
While moldy bread is beyond saving, dry and stale bread can be easily revitalized. Mairym suggests sprinkling the stale bread with water and then baking it in a 350-degree oven until it starts to steam. This will restore the bread’s softness and give it a crispy crust. Alternatively, you can simply dampen the crust by running it under water and bake it for 10 minutes.
By following these simple storage and revitalization tips, you can enjoy fresh, delicious bread for longer.
