With scorching temperatures reaching record highs, it’s crucial to remember your beloved houseplants are also feeling the heat. Just like humans, plants can suffer from heat stress, leading to nutrient depletion, dehydration, and even death.
To protect your leafy friends, experts recommend strategic placement during a heatwave. Instead of keeping them in the sunniest spots, move them away from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day. Opt for windows facing east or west, where the sun’s rays are less intense. This will help prevent your plants from overheating and drying out.
Additionally, provide your plants with ample hydration. Water them deeply in the morning or evening when the sun is less intense, ensuring the water reaches the roots. Using a watering can allows you to direct the water effectively.
Beyond protecting your plants, their presence can actually help cool your home. Plants naturally absorb heat through their leaves and release excess water vapor into the air through a process called transpiration. This process, similar to sweating, has a cooling effect on the surrounding environment, making your home feel slightly more comfortable.
Liza Garrison, Director of Product at Ruggable FR, emphasizes the importance of strategic plant placement to maximize this cooling effect: “If you keep plants, move these towards the windows/areas which get the most sun. The plants take in the heat, then they release excess water into the air from their leaves. By releasing evaporated water, plants cool themselves as well as the surrounding environment.”
So, while you’re taking precautions to stay cool during the heatwave, remember your plants need a little extra TLC too. By providing them with shade and hydration, you can ensure their well-being and even benefit from their natural cooling abilities.
