Kenya is poised to make a significant mark on the international stage by participating in Germany’s prestigious annual Citizen Festival, known as ‘Bürgerfest’. This marks a historic moment, as Kenya will be the first non-European nation to be part of the festival, which takes place on September 13th and 14th in Berlin. The event presents a unique opportunity for Kenya to strengthen its cultural ties with Germany, promote its tourism offerings, and attract investments.
Dr. Korir Sing’oei, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, highlighted the significance of this event, emphasizing its role in bolstering the already strong six-decade-long partnership between Kenya and Germany. Germany is a key investor in Kenya, with over 100 companies operating within the country, contributing investments valued at Ksh.150 billion.
The ‘Bürgerfest’ is anticipated to play a crucial role in boosting German tourist arrivals to Kenya, a key market for the country’s tourism industry. Last year, Kenya witnessed a remarkable 23.2% increase in German visitors, with arrivals surging from 66,064 to 81,359.
Further strengthening the bilateral relationship, Kenya and Germany are set to sign a Labour Agreement during the festival. This agreement will facilitate the migration of skilled and technical labor from Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates to work in Germany. This move underscores the commitment of both nations to fostering economic collaboration and opening up new avenues for skilled Kenyan workers.
