Kerala Braces for More Rains: Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts

Kerala is bracing for more rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy showers in several districts for October 26th and 27th. The state has been experiencing heavy rainfall for the past three days due to the influence of Cyclone Dana in the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD, in its latest press release, stated that light to moderate rainfall is expected at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, and Lakshadweep, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. These weather conditions are anticipated to subside thereafter. However, the IMD has also highlighted the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in Kerala and Mahe until October 27th.

According to the IMD’s weather system update dated October 25th, a cyclonic circulation persists over the Southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast at lower tropospheric levels. This circulation has been the primary driver of the heavy rainfall witnessed in the state over the past two days.

Currently, eight districts are under yellow alert: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. The ‘heavy rain’ alert in these districts was downgraded from orange to yellow on Friday. For October 27th, the yellow alert warning remains in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts.

Fishermen in Kerala are advised to exercise caution as squally weather conditions are expected to prevail with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along and off the Kerala Coast. The IMD has issued a warning urging fishermen to avoid venturing out to sea.

A cyclonic circulation is situated over the Southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, the IMD reported. As of Saturday morning at 6:50 am, the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram, recorded a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius with 98% humidity, according to the Meteorological Department.

Residents of Kerala are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of heavy rainfall.
