The devastating landslides that occurred on July 30 in Wayanad district of Kerala have left a family in ruins, with 16 members missing, including a mother, wife, and two children. The worst-affected regions of Mundakkai, Punchirimattam, and Chooralmala have witnessed unimaginable loss, as residents struggle to comprehend the scale of the tragedy.
Mansoor, a 42-year-old resident of Chooralmala, found his world shattered upon returning home. He lost his mother, wife, two children, and several other family members in the landslide. He was away at work when the disaster struck, narrowly escaping the tragedy. “I’m left with nothing,” Mansoor said, his eyes red from lack of sleep and tears. “My family, my home, everything is gone,” he added.
Mansoor’s brother, Nasir, described the devastating impact of the tragedy on their family. “We’ve found four bodies: my wife, son, sister, and my mom,” he said. “I still haven’t found my daughter. I wasn’t there when the incident happened because I was out for work. I have nothing left now. I’m currently staying with my brother.”
Nasir revealed that prior to the incident, the residents of the area did not receive any warning from the authorities. “When the water level was rising, I told them to come to my place. They said they were safe, but it ended in tragedy. Now everything is gone. The whole area is wiped out. My brother has lost everyone,” he said.
Search operations are currently underway in Mundakkai, Punchirimattam, and Chooralmala. The family, along with the entire community, anxiously awaits news of the missing loved ones.
