Kerala Schools, Colleges Shut Down Amid Sweltering Heat
Scorching temperatures have forced the closure of all schools and colleges in India’s Kerala state until Monday. This decision comes as most of India grapples with unusually high temperatures, prompting the weather department to forecast an elevated number of heatwave days from April to June.
Record Heatwave Days in Kerala
Heatwaves, characterized by prolonged periods of high heat, are a rarity in Kerala. However, data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that the state witnessed five heatwave days in April alone.
El Nino’s Impact
The IMD attributes the current heat spell to the prevailing El Nino weather pattern, which typically brings warmer and drier weather to Asia and heavier rainfall to certain parts of the Americas.
Heatwave Warning Issued
The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for several districts in Kerala, prompting the state government to direct people to minimize sun exposure and monitor situations to prevent wildfires. Educational institutions have been ordered to remain closed until Monday.
Global Impact of Heatwaves
Heatwaves have also forced school closures in other parts of Asia and North Africa, widening the learning gap between developing nations in the tropics and developed countries, according to experts.
Heat-Related Deaths Reported
Local media reports suggest that at least two people succumbed to the heat in Kerala earlier this week, although official confirmation is still pending.
High Humidity Aggravates Heat
In the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday. However, the high humidity made it feel like 46 degrees (115 degrees).
Forest Fires a Concern
Soaring temperatures and dry spells have fueled frequent forest fires in other parts of India. In Odisha state, blazes have been exacerbated by people burning forests to collect a flower used to brew alcohol.
