In a stride towards revolutionizing education, Kerala embarks on an unprecedented AI training initiative for approximately 80,000 secondary school teachers. This three-day training program, a collaboration between KITE (Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education) and secondary school teachers from Classes 8 to 12, aims to impart essential AI expertise. The initiative marks a significant step towards integrating AI into the educational landscape, setting a national precedent as the first of its kind in India. Scheduled to commence on May 2, the program envisions empowering teachers with advanced AI skills by August 2024, promising a transformative impact on teaching methods and learning outcomes.
The AI training focuses on summarization techniques, enabling teachers to simplify complex documents in various formats, including PDFs, images, and videos. They will learn to generate concise summaries that retain crucial information, and even create new content using AI tools. By August 2024, they will be equipped with the necessary AI expertise, as stated by an official statement.
A statement released by KITE on Monday announced that teachers will receive training in generating and editing visuals tailored to specific subjects. They will transform these visuals into cartoons or paintings and seamlessly integrate text with them. The training will then delve into Prompt Engineering and Machine Learning, empowering teachers to craft precise prompts crucial for maximizing the utility of AI tools. This hands-on approach will also provide them with a practical understanding of AI programming mechanisms.
Through data visualization, teachers will discover the capabilities of AI in crafting presentations and animations, and in generating and customizing tables, graphs, and charts tailored to specific educational needs. Subsequently, the training will focus on assessment techniques, equipping teachers with AI-based methods for evaluations. This will enable them to design diverse question formats, including unit tests, optimizing the assessment process.
Each training batch will comprise 25 teachers utilizing their laptops and mobile devices. To safeguard data privacy while utilizing AI tools, teachers will utilize G-Suite accounts set up by KITE, eliminating the need for them to use personal email IDs and other credentials.
The training aims to enable teachers to personalize learning activities for individual students and adapt resources to be inclusive for students with disabilities. Additionally, 180 Master Trainers from KITE have already completed comprehensive one-month AI training to prepare for this initiative. The training modules for various sessions are also prepared and ready to be deployed. Initially, the program will focus on training Higher Secondary and High School IT coordinators, as well as the little KITEs masters, as highlighted in the official statement.
Kerala’s ambitious AI training program for 80,000 secondary school teachers signifies a monumental leap toward modernizing the state’s educational framework. Spearheaded by KITE, this comprehensive initiative not only equips teachers with cutting-edge AI skills but also fosters a culture of innovation and inclusivity in classrooms. By emphasizing hands-on training, data privacy, and personalized learning, the program aims to revolutionize teaching methodologies and enhance learning outcomes across diverse student populations. With the groundwork laid by 180 trained Master Trainers and meticulously prepared modules, Kerala is poised to set a benchmark in AI-driven education, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for its students.
