Kerry Sim, the woman convicted of killing Reena Virk, has spoken out against the upcoming Hulu series ‘Under the Bridge,’ which dramatizes the notorious 1997 murder. In a parole board decision released on March 28, Sim’s comments were included, expressing her belief that the series is disrespectful to the victim and her family.
The parole board decision noted that Sim had not breached any parole conditions, had exhibited no violent or aggressive behavior, and remained family-focused. However, it also acknowledged her recent remorse and empathy for the victim, stating that Sim had expressed concern about the potential impact of the series on Virk’s family.
Sim’s trial revealed that she had admitted to placing her foot on Virk’s head and smoking a cigarette while the victim lay in the water beneath the bridge. The Hulu series, starring Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, has received mixed reactions from critics, with some expressing concern about the potential sensationalization of the tragedy.
Sim was granted day parole in 2017 and extended overnight leave privileges in 2020. Her parole was previously suspended due to incidents of domestic violence, but she has since resumed day release with overnight leave. The Parole Board of Canada has decided to continue these privileges for another six months.
While Sim’s psychological risk assessment indicates a moderate to high-moderate risk for future violence over the long term, the board determined that her risk is relatively low in the short term. She is required to abstain from drugs and alcohol, and avoid contact with Virk’s family during her day parole.
