King Charles Approves Law Targeting Rogue Pedicabs in London

The new law, which became an Act of Parliament on Thursday, is a culmination of years of campaigning by Conservative MP Nickie Aiken. It aims to clamp down on rogue pedicab drivers who have been exploiting tourists with exorbitant fares and engaging in unsafe practices.

Prior to the bill’s passage, Transport for London lacked the authority to regulate pedicabs and their drivers, while the police had limited powers to control their operations. The absence of background checks, work eligibility verification, and fare regulations raised significant concerns.

Additionally, pedicab drivers violated traffic regulations by parking in bus lanes, driving on red routes, and disregarding one-way rules. These practices posed safety hazards and caused inconvenience for pedestrians and other road users.

The new legislation will empower Transport for London to implement a licensing system that will regulate the number of pedicabs operating in London, set fare limits, and establish safety standards. It will also require drivers to undergo criminal record and right-to-work checks.

Transport for London estimates that up to 900 pedicabs operate in London during peak season. The new regulations aim to ensure that these vehicles are operated safely and responsibly, protecting tourists from rip-offs and local residents from disturbances.
