Former Jersey City mayoral candidate Lewis Spears is the driving force behind Kismet of Kings, a nonprofit organization that provides mentorship, life skills training, and entrepreneurial education to Black and Brown students in underserved neighborhoods. Founded in response to the tragic murder of his cousin, Spears’ mission is to empower young people and break the cycle of poverty and violence that disproportionately affects communities of color.
Kismet of Kings has a proven track record of success. A pilot program at Dickinson High School saw 16 out of 20 participants move on to their sophomore year without any issues. The organization has partnered with the Anti-Violence Coalition and the Coalition for Food and Health Equity to provide additional support services to its participants, including access to healthy meals and job opportunities.
Despite the challenges faced by Black men in the job market, Spears believes that Kismet of Kings can make a real difference in the lives of its participants. By providing them with the skills and resources they need to succeed, Kismet of Kings is helping to build a brighter future for Jersey City’s youth.
The May 3 gala will be an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Kismet of Kings and raise funds to support its continued work. Tables will be named after each of the organization’s participants, giving attendees a chance to learn more about their stories. Tickets to the gala are $175 and can be purchased at givebutter.com/KoK.
Spears has not yet decided whether he will run for mayor again in 2025, but he is committed to continuing his work with Kismet of Kings. He believes that the organization can play a vital role in addressing the needs of Jersey City’s youth and building a more just and equitable community for all.
