Kit Harington’s MCU Future Uncertain as ‘Blade’ Faces Production Delays and ‘Eternals’ Sequel Unlikely

Kit Harington, best known for his portrayal of Jon Snow in the beloved series ‘Game of Thrones’, ventured into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with a role in the 2021 film ‘Eternals’ as Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight. While Harington’s character had a relatively minor role in ‘Eternals,’ a post-credits scene hinted at his significant future in the MCU, particularly in the upcoming ‘Blade’ movie. The scene suggested that Harington’s Dane Whitman would take on the mantle of the Black Knight and become a central figure within the MCU.

However, the road to ‘Blade’ has been riddled with obstacles and delays, casting doubt on Harington’s return as the Black Knight. Since its announcement in July 2019, the film has experienced multiple director and screenwriter changes. Initially helmed by Bassam Tariq, the project saw him step down just two months before filming began in September 2022. In June of this year, another director, Yann Demange, also left the project. The screenwriter team has also undergone a series of changes, with Stacey Osei-Kuffour, the first Black woman to write a Marvel film, and Michael Starrbury, both leaving the project. Recently, Eric Pearson, who previously worked on ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ was brought on board as the new screenwriter.

Furthermore, the future of ‘Eternals,’ which ended on a cliffhanger suggesting a possible sequel, appears uncertain. The film’s worldwide box office earnings fell short of expectations, grossing only $402 million. As a result, reports indicate that a sequel is currently not in the works.

With ‘Blade’ facing production delays and a sequel to ‘Eternals’ seemingly off the table, the future of Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight in the MCU remains shrouded in uncertainty. Fans will have to wait and see if and when Harington will reprise his role and what his future holds in the vast expanse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
