Kiyan Nassiri’s football journey took a dramatic turn on January 29, 2022. The then 22-year-old achieved a feat most Indian footballers dream of – scoring a hat-trick in the Kolkata Derby. His second-half treble propelled Mohun Bagan Super Giant to a 3-1 comeback win against East Bengal, etching his name in the annals of Indian football history.
However, Nassiri’s path since then has been characterized by a series of starts and stops. Despite his heritage, being the son of East Bengal legend Jamshed Nassiri, competition for playing time at Mohun Bagan limited his opportunities. He made just six starts in three seasons before seeking greener pastures with Chennaiyin FC this summer, aiming for more consistent game time under manager Owen Coyle.
In September, Nassiri received a significant boost to his career – a call-up to the Indian national team for the Intercontinental Cup 2024. New India head coach Manolo Marquez saw enough in Nassiri’s performances to include him in his squad. While he was an unused substitute in India’s opening draw against Mauritius, he remains hopeful for his debut in the final match against Syria.
“I am happy after my national team call-up and happy to be here. This camp is special. I’m at a new club and now, the atmosphere is new here as well,” Nassiri expressed. He recognizes the challenge ahead, stating, “If I train well, I’ll get an opportunity. It’s going to happen sooner or later. I’m okay with that [waiting for my chance]. We are looking forward to the next game. Again, whether I’m a sub(stitute), or I get to play, that’s up to the coach.”
Despite a frustrating goalless draw against Mauritius, Nassiri remains positive, acknowledging areas for improvement while emphasizing the team’s ongoing adaptation to Manolo’s system. He is aware of the fierce competition for the striker spot, a position India is actively looking to solidify for the long term. Nassiri, however, is versatile, stating his willingness to play anywhere in the forward line, be it on the flanks or as the lone striker.
With his undeniable talent and unwavering dedication, Kiyan Nassiri is poised to make his mark on the international stage. His journey from a hat-trick hero in the Kolkata Derby to a potential Indian national team star is a testament to his hard work and determination. The Intercontinental Cup presents a golden opportunity for him to showcase his skills and potentially earn that coveted India debut.
