In a captivating turn of events, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has unveiled another enigmatic spinner from Afghanistan: wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Gurbaz, who has yet to make an appearance in KKR’s playing XI, has caught the attention of coaches and fans alike with his impressive bowling skills during net practice.
Known for nurturing world-class mystery spinners, Afghanistan has produced a string of exceptional talents who have showcased their prowess on the global cricket stage. From Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad to Mohammad Nabi, these bowlers have left batters perplexed with their uncanny abilities. Gurbaz, with his proven batting prowess, could potentially join this illustrious group after showcasing his bowling skills in the nets.
Gurbaz, who joined Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2023 at a base price of Rs 50 lakh, made a significant contribution to the team, amassing 227 runs in 7 matches with a remarkable strike rate of 133.53. He was subsequently traded to KKR ahead of the 2024 IPL at his base price.
Currently, KKR boasts an established mystery spinner in Sunil Narine, making it intriguing to speculate whether Gurbaz will be introduced in a dual role. KKR’s next match is against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday, April 26, at the Eden Garden Stadium. As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen if Gurbaz will take on a new dimension in KKR’s strategy and add another chapter to the legacy of Afghan mystery spinners in the IPL.
