With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 just a month away, the Indian cricket team is preparing to announce its 15-member squad. While star batter Virat Kohli’s place in the team is all but assured, there is speculation about his batting position when India takes on Ireland in their tournament opener on June 6.
Some experts, such as former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, believe that Kohli should open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. The duo has not played a T20I in over a year since India’s loss in the 2022 World Cup, but they returned in January 2024 for a series against Afghanistan.
Harbhajan Singh, a former India spinner, has a different view. He advocates for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma as the openers, with Kohli coming in at number three. Singh believes this would provide a left-right batting combination at the top and allow Shivam Dube to bat at number three if needed.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh has suggested that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli consider giving up on playing T20I cricket after the completion of the World Cup. He believes that as they get older, their age will become a factor and they should retire on their own terms.
India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
