The Garden Reach building in Kolkata, which collapsed on March 18, killing 13 people, was made of substandard materials and had a faulty design, according to a report by Jadavpur University (JU). JU has submitted the report to the Kolkata Police (KP), who are now waiting for a final report that will specify the standard of the materials used. A charge sheet will be filed based on this report.
A soil report is expected from another agency. Sources said an SOP in probing construction collapses and accidents, that was developed after the Vivekananda flyover crash, is being used here.
The probe revealed the TMT bars and concrete used were of extremely poor quality. An officer said: “I was shocked to find the building was constructed without a proper foundation. The materials used were of sub-standard quality. We have identified spots from where the materials were procured. We will wait for the court to tell us if the suppliers, too, need to be investigated,” said an officer.
