Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer arrested in the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, has reportedly failed a lie detector test. According to sources, Roy claimed during the test on Sunday that the victim was already dead when he found her and that he ran away in fear. He also provided multiple “alibis,” further fueling suspicion.
CBI sources described Roy as “unnerved and anxious” during the hours of questioning. The lie detector test flagged several “false and unconvincing answers,” further raising doubts about his claims.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted the polygraph or lie-detection test on Roy at Kolkata’s Presidency Jail, where he is currently being held. Earlier, Roy’s lawyer had told NDTV that his client was ready for the polygraph test, claiming his innocence and asserting that he was “framed.”
Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. A Bluetooth device found near the victim’s body, along with CCTV footage showing Roy on the third floor of the hospital, led to his arrest.
The CBI also conducted polygraph tests on several other individuals, including former principal of the RGKMCH Sandip Ghosh, as part of their investigation. The agency had sought permission from a local court to conduct lie-detector tests on seven persons, including Roy and Ghosh. While the results of the tests cannot be used as evidence during the trial, they provide valuable insights and direction for the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, junior doctors at the RGKMCH continue their cease work protest, demanding justice for the deceased doctor and the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. This Sunday marked the 17th consecutive day of their protest, severely impacting healthcare services in Bengal.
The CBI investigation is ongoing, and the results of the lie detector tests are expected to play a crucial role in determining the course of the investigation.
