A controversy has erupted surrounding the investigation into the tragic murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Amit Malviya, Head of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT cell and West Bengal in-charge, shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) allegedly showing a crowded seminar room on the fourth floor of the hospital. He claimed the video was shot shortly after the doctor’s body was discovered, suggesting the crime scene was contaminated by the presence of numerous individuals, including doctors, police, and hospital staff.
However, Kolkata police have categorically refuted Malviya’s claims, stating that the crime scene was promptly cordoned off and access was restricted to authorized personnel only. Deputy Commissioner of Police Indira Mukherjee clarified that the crowd seen in the video was situated outside the cordoned-off area, in a remaining section of the seminar room. These individuals included family members and doctors who were seated there, expressing their demands.
The Kolkata Police has further emphasized the security measures taken at the scene, stating that a 40-foot cordon was established around the seminar hall and curtains were used as a barrier. This contradicts Malviya’s allegations of a chaotic and uncontrolled environment that compromised evidence.
Meanwhile, the National Task Force, established by the Supreme Court in response to the doctor’s murder, will convene its first meeting on August 27. The task force, composed of medical professionals, government officials, and experts, aims to make recommendations for improving the safety and security of medical professionals in their workplaces. The meeting is expected to be attended by all members of the National Task Force, including the Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, and Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
This incident has sparked significant concerns about the safety of medical professionals and the importance of ensuring secure and controlled environments during investigations.
