Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: Police Clarify Evidence Tampering Allegations, CBI Conducts Polygraph Tests

The Kolkata Police on Monday addressed allegations of evidence tampering in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The allegations arose after renovation work commenced at the hospital just a day after the incident.

Kolkata Police DC CD Indira Mukherjee clarified that the seminar hall, where the doctor’s body was found, was cordoned off using ‘hospital curtains’ rather than any attempt to conceal evidence. She stated, “Let me clarify, that seminar hall is a room which is 51 ft by 32 ft and when the body was found, the hospital curtains were used to cordon off the area.” Mukherjee addressed concerns raised on social media and news channels about potential evidence tampering.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began a second round of polygraph tests on former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) principal Sandip Ghosh and five other individuals as part of their ongoing investigation. An officer revealed that Ghosh’s responses during questioning over the past ten days have been inconsistent, prompting the additional polygraph tests.

The case revolves around the brutal rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9th. A civic volunteer was apprehended the following day in connection with the crime.

In a separate development, at least six out of nearly 40,000 Durga Puja committees in West Bengal have rejected the ₹85,000 honorarium offered by the Mamata Banerjee government. The committees cited their inability to accept the assistance while women are actively protesting for greater security and safety. Durga Puja, a significant festival in West Bengal, is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu goddess Durga.
