The city of Kolkata continues to be gripped by outrage over the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor, with protests and calls for justice intensifying as the one-month mark of the crime approaches. On Sunday, thousands are expected to participate in the third ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign, a series of rallies planned for midnight across West Bengal. The demonstrations, which aim to pressure authorities and demand justice for the victim, will take place at multiple locations, including Gol Park, Garia, Sodepur, Shyambazar, and other areas in Kolkata and surrounding districts.
The ‘Reclaim the Night’ movement has seen widespread participation from various sectors of society, including musicians, artists, painters, actors, former students, sculptors from Kumartuli, rickshaw pullers, and junior doctors. The campaign, which started on August 14, aims to ‘awaken the ruler’ and shed light on the pervasive issue of violence against women.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday, adding another layer of intensity to the ongoing legal proceedings. The case has sparked widespread criticism of the West Bengal government, with many demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.
The victim, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was found dead on the morning of August 9. A civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested the following day in connection with the crime. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently conducting a probe into the alleged rape and murder, following an order from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation remains ongoing as the nation awaits justice for the victim and her family.
The ‘Reclaim the Night’ rallies, along with the Supreme Court hearing, serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against violence against women and the urgent need for justice and accountability in such heinous crimes.
