The nation is mourning the tragic death of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at a Kolkata hospital. The victim’s father, in an interview with a news channel, shared his daughter’s last diary entry, which revealed her unwavering dedication to her medical career and her aspirations for the future.
The 31-year-old victim, described by her father as a hard-working student, had just completed her night shift at RG Kar Medical College on the fateful night of the incident. In her final diary entry, she expressed her desire to excel in her MD course and earn a gold medal. Her father, heartbroken by the loss of his daughter, expressed that while nothing could fill the void left by her absence, he hoped that justice would be served and the perpetrator punished.
Initially, the family was told that their daughter had committed suicide. However, the autopsy revealed a horrifying truth: the victim had been raped and brutally murdered. She was found resting in the seminar hall of the hospital, and the autopsy report indicated signs of severe trauma, including bleeding from her mouth, eyes, and private parts. The report also noted a deep wound in her private parts, suggesting genital torture, and a broken cartilage in her throat, indicating strangulation before she was smothered to death. Multiple other injuries were found on her body.
The following day, a civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has since taken over the investigation. The horrific incident has ignited nationwide protests by doctors and medical fraternities who are demanding justice for the victim and calling for stronger safety measures for healthcare workers. They are demanding an end to the violence and a safer working environment for all medical professionals.
