The Kolkata Police has vehemently rejected claims made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the alleged tampering of the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI had previously asserted that the seminar hall where the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor intern was found dead earlier this month had been altered. During a Supreme Court hearing, the agency alleged that the crime scene had been tampered with and the victim’s family had been misled into believing their daughter’s death was a suicide.
However, the Kolkata Police has firmly refuted these allegations. DCP Central, Kolkata Police, Indira Mukherjee, clarified that all individuals present at the scene, as seen in the viral photograph, were “fully authorized” to be there. The photograph, which has been widely circulated, shows several people gathered at the crime scene. Mukherjee emphasized that the area had been cordoned off and that the body was located behind the cordoned area. She further stated that all individuals depicted in the photograph were part of the investigation team.
The Kolkata Police has provided evidence to support their claims. Photos obtained by India Today show the individuals present at the scene clearly marked as members of the investigation team. The Kolkata Police asserts that the photograph in question was taken on August 9th, following the completion of the inquest.
In contrast, the CBI, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, highlighted the delay in filing the FIR as a cause for concern. Mehta stated that the first FIR was registered at 11:45 pm after the victim’s cremation. He further pointed out that the parents had been initially told that their daughter’s death was a suicide, and later that it was a death. Only after friends of the doctor at the hospital insisted on videography did suspicions arise. Mehta argued that by the fifth day of the investigation, significant alterations had been made, including the crime scene itself.
The differing accounts of the Kolkata Police and the CBI regarding the crime scene investigation have further complicated the already sensitive case. The investigation into the doctor’s death continues, with both agencies determined to uncover the truth. The Supreme Court is monitoring the case closely, and its role in ensuring a fair and impartial investigation will be crucial.
