Tensions escalated in Kolkata as protests demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital turned violent. On Tuesday, clashes erupted between police and protesters who were attempting to march towards the West Bengal secretariat, ‘Nabanna’.
Protesters, demanding justice for the deceased doctor, clashed with police as they tried to break through barricades. The situation took a turn for the worse when a video surfaced on social media, shared by TMC MP Mahua Moitra, showing police officers being allegedly beaten by BJP supporters. Moitra condemned the incident, stating that the ‘Right to peaceful process cannot mean right to brutal assault’. She questioned who would deliver justice for the injured police officers and criticized the ‘paid trolls & Godi Media’ for their silence.
The clashes resulted in injuries to both protesters and police personnel. Over 200 people were arrested in connection with the rally, including 33 women. Kolkata Police sources reported that 126 members and supporters of Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, one of the rally organizers, were apprehended. The police claimed that the situation was under control due to their preparedness and intelligence gathering.
In response to the alleged police brutality, the BJP called for a general strike on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Bengal government assured that the administration would take measures to ensure normal life is not disrupted during the strike.
