Kolkata Zoo Combats Heatwave with Water Coolers, Sprinklers, and ORS for Animals

As Kolkata grapples with soaring temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius, the Alipore Zoo has stepped up efforts to safeguard its animal inhabitants from the sweltering heat. A range of measures have been implemented to keep the animals cool and hydrated, including the installation of air coolers for kangaroos and black bears, as well as showers for the elephants.

The animal’s diets have also been adjusted to include more summer fruits like watermelon, bananas, and sweet limes. Carnivores have experienced a reduction in the fat content of their meat. Additionally, ORS is being added to the animals’ drinking water to prevent dehydration.

Beyond these measures, the zoo has also instituted precautions for visitors. Ticketed vehicles are available for guided tours, and necessary precautions have been put in place to minimize heat-related discomfort.

The zoo’s proactive approach extends to the acquisition of new animals. The arrival of a female Siberian tiger, five wild dogs, a pair of wolves, and a pair of hyenas from the Vizag Zoo is anticipated.

The heatwave is forecast to persist throughout the week, with temperatures expected to rise further. A red alert has been issued for East Midnapore, while an orange alert is in effect for several other districts in West Bengal. The IMD predicts light rainfall in certain areas, which could provide some respite from the extreme heat.
