Koti Vruksha Abhiyana: Vijayapura Transforms Into Green Haven with 1.30 Crore Trees

Launched in 2015, the ‘Koti Vruksha Abhiyana’ has transformed Vijayapura from an arid landscape to a green haven. The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the local forest departments and NGOs, has resulted in the planting of over 1.30 crore trees across the district.

In the fiscal year 2021-22, the campaign achieved its ambitious goal of planting one crore trees. Over 80 lakh saplings were distributed to farmers, who planted over 50 lakh trees across 100 block plantations, covering 5,000 hectares of land. The initiative also boasts one of the largest urban forest plantations in the state, with over 60,000 saplings planted on 600 acres on the city outskirts.

The drive has not only revived the environment but has also empowered local farmers. The saplings are distributed at 90% subsidized rates, encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable practices. Minister M.B. Patil lauded the efforts of all involved in the project, particularly the field workers, guards, farmers, and District Forest Officers, who have worked diligently to ensure the success of the campaign.

The next phase of the plantation drive aims to establish one of the largest man-made block plantations around Mamadapur village. The target is to plant 2 lakh saplings in a single-block plantation, with 1 lakh to be planted by the end of 2024. The plantation will cover a total area of 626 hectares.

NGOs such as the Society for Protection of Plants and Animals (SPPA) have played a significant role in raising awareness about the campaign in rural areas. Through interactive campaigns and activities, they have educated over 8,000 rural students about the importance of tree plantation and wildlife conservation.

The progress made through the Koti Vruksha Abhiyana is evident in the increased wildlife and environmental diversity in the region. The forest cover has improved from 0.17% to 0.24%, and over 185 species of birds have been documented in the plantations. The initiative has also contributed to a reduction in temperatures and timely rainfall in the district.
