The Kremlin has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, stating that the situation risks completely destabilizing the entire region.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed his grave concern, stating that the conflict has the potential to expand beyond its current boundaries and lead to widespread regional instability. “It is, of course, an event that is potentially very dangerous,” Peskov told journalists, adding, “Of course that causes us extreme concern and worry.”
His comments came in response to Israel’s launch of numerous air strikes targeting Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon. The strikes followed a devastating bombardment that killed 492 people, including 35 children, marking the deadliest attack since the 2006 war.
Echoing the Kremlin’s concerns, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued a statement unequivocally condemning Israel’s “massive military attacks committed against Lebanon.” She deemed “indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians” as wholly unacceptable and stressed the urgent need to end the escalating violence to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control.
Despite fostering closer ties with Israel in recent years, Russia has consistently condemned Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire. Since launching its offensive in Ukraine, Russia has solidified its alliance with Iran, a key supporter of both Hamas and Hezbollah, and has expressed heightened apprehension regarding the potential for a broader regional war in the Middle East.
