Lakeville is poised to become the home of a multi-million dollar public safety training facility dedicated to the Dakota County law enforcement community. The project, which has received an initial $800,000 in federal funding announced by U.S. Rep. Angie Craig, aims to provide officers with a comprehensive and modern training environment. The facility will encompass physical and virtual training areas, a firing range, armory, tactical training room, and classrooms. While the total cost of the project could reach $24 million, the city is working to keep the price within the range of $14-$20 million, according to Lakeville City Administrator Justin Miller. In addition to the federal funding, the project has received a $7 million commitment from the state and is actively seeking additional support from both state and federal agencies. The city has already partnered with St. Paul-based Oertel Architects to develop designs for the facility, which will be located at the city’s former public works site at 7777 214th St. The project highlights the city’s commitment to providing law enforcement with the necessary resources and training to ensure their safety and effectiveness in serving the community. As U.S. Rep. Angie Craig stated in a news release, “As public officials, we have a responsibility to provide every member of the law enforcement community with the training, resources, and protection they need to do their jobs – and do their jobs safely.” The facility is expected to begin construction in 2025, pending the securing of additional funding.
