Lalique, the esteemed crystal glass maker established in 1888 by renowned artist René Lalique, is celebrating the centennial anniversary of its factory in Alsace with a remarkable collaboration with light artist James Turrell. The collaboration, a testament to the artistry of both creators, culminates in an exhibition that explores the ethereal interplay of light and crystal.
This year, Lalique and Turrell unveil their joint endeavor in Japan. The exhibition, a culmination of four years of meticulous work, features an array of captivating pieces including the mesmerizing ‘Crystal Light’ panel and two exquisite fragrances.
‘Crystal Light,’ a mesmerizing panel inspired by Turrell’s 2013 Guggenheim Museum installation ‘Aten Reign,’ presents a graphic interpretation of the artist’s iconic light and space installations. The panel’s undulating hues are brought to life by a strategically placed screen behind the piece, adding a captivating dynamic to the already mesmerizing work.
Turrell, captivated by Lalique’s exquisite and innovative perfume bottles, drew inspiration from the architectural structures of stupas (Buddhist temples) found in Egypt and Asia to create two unique perfume bottles. Working closely with perfumers, Turrell ventured into the world of fragrance for the first time, resulting in two evocative scents: ‘Renzlighter’ and ‘Purple Sage.’
‘Renzlighter’ evokes the sun-drenched landscapes of the American West, with a fragrance reminiscent of sage-scented leather, pepper, amber, and citrus. ‘Purple Sage,’ on the other hand, transforms from fruity and musky notes into a more complex aroma, blending purple sage, mandarin, grapefruit, and rhubarb.
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to witness the exquisite fusion of Lalique’s masterful crystal craftsmanship and Turrell’s captivating exploration of light. Don’t miss the chance to experience these captivating works for yourself, on display at the Isetan Shinjuku Store until August 29th.
