Laos has witnessed a remarkable rebound in tourism, with over 2.3 million international travelers visiting the country in the first seven months of 2024, representing an 18% increase compared to the same period last year. This influx of tourists generated over US$700 million in revenue, a testament to the country’s growing popularity as a destination.
Domestic tourism also flourished, with over 2 million Lao citizens exploring their own country, a 78% jump from the previous year. This domestic travel contributed more than US$332 million to the local economy, highlighting the significant impact of tourism on Laos’ economic development.
The Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mrs. Darany Phommavongsa, announced these figures during the opening of a national tour guide training course in Vientiane. This comprehensive program, running from September 9 to November 29, has attracted 89 participants, showcasing the country’s commitment to fostering a skilled tourism workforce.
The training program is designed to develop well-rounded tour guides equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to showcase Laos’ rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and religious attractions. Participants will receive training in ethical practices, ensuring they provide excellent service while guiding groups to various destinations across the country.
The government’s recent initiative to introduce visa-free travel for tourists from specific countries and extended stay durations for visitors from these nations has been instrumental in driving the tourism boom. These regulations, effective from July 1 to December 31, 2024, have made it easier for travelers to explore the beauty and wonders of Laos, contributing to its continued economic success.
