The entertainment industry mourns the loss of Terry Carter, a beloved actor who passed away peacefully at his Manhattan residence on Tuesday. He was 95 years old. Carter’s remarkable career included iconic roles such as Sgt. Joe Broadhurst in ‘McCloud’ and Colonel Tigh in the original ‘Battlestar Galactica’ series.
Beyond his memorable roles, Carter also made significant contributions as an Emmy-nominated producer. He gained recognition as one of the first Black actors to regularly appear on a television sitcom, showcasing his talent in 92 episodes of ‘The Phil Silvers Show’ as Private Sugarman. His versatility extended to the big screen, where he appeared in films such as ‘Parrish’ and ‘Foxy Brown.’
Carter’s impact extended beyond acting. He became a trailblazer as New England’s first Black TV anchor on WBZ-TV ‘Eyewitness News’ in Boston, while simultaneously portraying a character in the acclaimed series ‘Combat!’ His passion for the arts led him to establish his own production company in 1975.
Carter’s legacy is marked by his indelible contributions to both television and film. He leaves behind a family who cherished him: his wife Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, his children Miguel and Melinda, and extended family. A private family memorial is planned to honor his life and celebrate his exceptional contributions to the entertainment world.
