The Indian fashion world is mourning the loss of a legend. Rohit Bal, the celebrated fashion designer known for his captivating blend of traditional patterns and modern sensibilities, passed away on November 1st, 2023, at the age of 63. He had been battling a prolonged illness and was hospitalized in November 2023 after a heart ailment at the intensive care unit of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Earlier this year, Bal returned to work and showcased his last collection at the Lakme India Fashion Week in Delhi last month.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), of which Bal was a founding member, expressed their grief on Instagram, stating, “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, and inspired generations. His legacy of artistry, and innovation along with forward thinking will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace GUDDA. You are a legend.”
Tributes poured in from across the industry, with many remembering Bal’s warm personality and immense contribution to Indian fashion. Raymond’s Chairman and Managing Director, in a heartfelt message on X, wrote, “Heartbroken to say goodbye to an incredible friend. You brought so much light, laughter, and kindness into the lives of everyone around you. I’m grateful for every moment we shared, every laugh, every conversation. You’ll be missed beyond words, but your spirit will live on in all of us. Rest peacefully, my friend.”
Noted journalist Vir Sanghvi also shared his condolences on X, writing, “RIP Rohit Bal. Gone too soon. A king among designers. A prince among men. He had been famous for over three decades. But he never stopped being a regular guy, always ready with a laugh, always a friend first & a creative genius second. The world is a poorer place without him.”
Singer Shibani Kashyap expressed her grief on X, saying, “Rest in peace, @rohitbal_. The fashion world has lost a true icon, a visionary whose designs defied time and set new standards of elegance. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit and the beauty you created will live on forever.” National awardee filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar echoed similar sentiments, writing on X, “I am shocked to hear about Rohit Bal’s passing. The fashion world has lost a true visionary whose elegant designs broke boundaries & set new trends. Your absence will be deeply felt, and the fashion world will never be the same without you my friend.”
Rohit Bal embarked on his journey in fashion designing in 1986. He and his brother founded Orchid Overseas Pvt. Ltd. in 1990, and Bal made his independent collection debut that same year. His designs, known for their appeal to all genders, showcased a mastery of materials like velvet and brocade, incorporating intricate patterns inspired by the rich heritage and opulence of India. He opened flagship stores in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai, further solidifying his presence in the Indian fashion landscape.
Bal’s educational background also played a role in shaping his unique perspective on fashion. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephens College in Delhi and later pursued a course in fashion at the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi. His journey from a history graduate to a celebrated fashion icon is a testament to his unwavering passion and dedication to the world of fashion.
