Lemon Water: Health Benefits vs. Tooth Enamel Risk

Lemon water has taken the internet by storm, with countless TikTok videos touting its benefits for hydration, vitamin C intake, and a refreshing alternative to sugary drinks. While these claims hold some truth, a dentist has shed light on a potential health hazard associated with this popular beverage.

Dr. Stephanie Dumanian, owner of Park Lex 60 Dental, emphasizes the damaging effects of lemon water’s acidity on tooth enamel. She explains that the high acidity can erode the enamel, leading to potential tooth sensitivity and even cavities.

“I see a lot of effects on patient’s enamel [from drinking lemon water],” she said. “And they can’t figure out what’s changed. Then I ask, ‘Do you drink lemon water in the morning?’ And they’re like, ‘Every morning!’ And I’m like, ‘Ahhhhhhhh!’”

To mitigate this risk, Dr. Dumanian advises against brushing your teeth immediately after consuming acidic beverages like lemon water. The acidity weakens the enamel, making it more vulnerable to damage during brushing. She recommends waiting 20 to 30 minutes after drinking lemon water before brushing or rinsing your mouth with water to neutralize the acid. Alternatively, using a straw can help minimize contact with your teeth.

Dr. Dumanian also suggests sipping lemon water at room temperature or even warm, as hot drinks can further exacerbate enamel erosion.

This advice applies not only to lemon water but to other acidic beverages like coffee. Using a straw during coffee consumption can help minimize staining and protect your teeth from direct contact with the acidic liquid.

Beyond the lemon water debate, Dr. Dumanian offers valuable insights into other dental health concerns, including the reasons behind cavities and bad breath.
