Get ready to dust off that old electric guitar! Disney has confirmed that ‘Freaky Friday 2’ is officially in production, reuniting stars Lindsay Lohan and Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis as mother and daughter Anna and Tess Coleman. The sequel is due to hit theaters in 2025.
‘Freaky Friday 2’ comes over 20 years after Lohan and Curtis first swapped bodies in 2003’s ‘Freaky Friday’. Directed by ‘Late Night’ director Nisha Ganatra, ‘Freaky Friday 2’ gives the beloved formula “a multigenerational twist,” according to its official synopsis. A teen no longer, Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. “As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” reads the logline.
Lohan and Curtis aren’t the only ‘Freaky Friday’ stars returning for the sequel. ‘One Tree Hill’’s Chad Michael Murray will reprise his role as Jake (once a love interest for Lohan’s Anna) and Mark Harmon will return as Ryan (Tess’s fiancé, then new husband) in ‘Freaky Friday 2’. They’re joined by Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.
New faces are also getting freaky in the sequel, including ‘The Good Place’’s Manny Jacinto, ‘Never Have I Ever’’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’’s Julia Butters, and Sophia Hammons.
Lohan and Curtis’s ‘Freaky Friday’ was the third film adaptation of Mary Rodgers’s original 1972 novel. The 2003 version grossed over $160 million at the global box office. It was adapted into a musical by ‘Next to Normal’’s Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, which was filmed and released on the Disney channel in 2018.
A direct ‘Freaky Friday’ sequel has been rumored for years, ever since Curtis appeared on ‘The View’ in October 2022 and said that she had “written to Disney” about wanting to make it. Curtis eventually got her wish. The ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ star took to Instagram to post behind-the-scenes footage of herself and Lindsay. “We are freaking out because the Colemans are getting freaky again,” wrote Curtis on Instagram. Lohan echoed the sentiment on her own Instagram page, simply writing, “We’re back!”
