Lions Positional Preview Series: Defensive Back

The Detroit Lions head into the NFL Draft with a need to address their defensive backfield, particularly at outside cornerback. Despite a strong draft record under general manager Brad Holmes, the Lions have yet to land an impact outside cornerback.

Currently, the projected starters in the secondary are Carlton Davis, Amik Robertson, Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and Ifeatu Melifonwu. However, the lack of depth and consistency at outside cornerback remains a concern.

Holmes has shown a willingness to trade up for players he believes in, including last year’s move for Jameson Williams. With late picks in the early rounds and no fourth-round selection, the Lions may be hesitant to give up resources in the first round.

If Detroit sits tight at 29th overall, several prospects could make sense. Iowa’s Cooper DeJean is a versatile defensive back who could play outside cornerback, in the slot, or even at safety. Alabama’s Kool-Aid McKinstry is another intriguing option, possessing excellent coverage skills and physicality.

Clemson’s Nate Wiggins offers blazing speed but may lack the physicality the Lions prioritize. Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw brings toughness and strong tackling ability, while Michigan’s Mike Sainristil has a unique background as a former receiver who transitioned to defense.

While the focus has primarily been on cornerbacks, the Lions also need to address depth at safety. With only Joseph and Melifonwu as starters and Brandon Joseph as the lone backup under contract, the Lions could look to add players like Wake Forest’s Malik Mustapha, who has experience at both safety positions and in the slot.

Overall, the Lions have several options to improve their defensive backfield in the upcoming draft. Whether they trade up for a top prospect or address the position later on, it is clear that the secondary is a priority for Detroit as they look to bolster their defense.
