Lithium Universe Ups Sustainability Game with Green Lithium Refinery in Canada

Lithium Universe Ltd (ASX:LU7, OTC:ESMAF) is making a strategic move towards sustainability with the construction of a green battery-grade lithium carbonate refinery in Becancour, Québec, Canada. The company has formally requested up to 18 MW of green electricity from Hydro-Québec, a prominent renewable energy provider in North America. This request is based on an extensive engineering study by Hatch Engineering, which determined the power needs for the refinery’s initial production line.

Following a thorough port analysis, Lithium Universe has designated Bécancour Port as the most suitable import hub for lithium-rich spodumene, the raw material for the refinery. The spodumene can be sourced from locations within Canada or abroad, such as Brazil, Africa, or even Australia, via the Atlantic Ocean.

The proposed refinery will be situated within the Bécancour Waterfront Industrial Park (BWIP), specifically on Lot 22. This strategic location offers proximity to the port for efficient spodumene imports. Additionally, the industrial park is situated at the intersection of hydro-electrical distribution networks, providing a stable and cost-effective source of hydroelectric power in Québec.

Hydro-Québec is a leading player in renewable energy, with over 99% of its power generated from water sources. This aligns with Lithium Universe’s commitment to producing greener battery-grade lithium carbonate. The application to Hydro-Québec outlines the power requirements for the refinery’s construction, commissioning, start-up, and gradual ramp-up to full production of the first 16,000 tonnes per annum battery-grade lithium carbonate train.

Lithium Universe believes this move will help close the North American lithium conversion processing gap. The company is dedicated to fast-tracking the development of the refinery to meet the growing demand for sustainable lithium-based products.
