Liverpool midfielder Sofie Lundgaard has been ruled out for the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during their Women’s Super League (WSL) match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The 22-year-old Denmark youth international was forced off the pitch in the first half of Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Spurs.
The club confirmed that Lundgaard will require surgery and will begin her rehabilitation at the club. “We’re all devastated for Sofie. We have to rally around her because it’s going to be tough at times during the rehabilitation programme,” said Liverpool manager Matt Beard in a statement.
Unfortunately, Lundgaard is not the only WSL player to suffer an ACL injury this season. Everton’s Aurora Galli and Inma Gabarro, Chelsea defender Jorja Fox, and midfielder Sophie Ingle are also currently sidelined with the same injury. Additionally, a number of other players, including Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord and Chelsea strikers Mia Fishel and Sam Kerr, are still recovering from ACL injuries sustained earlier this year.
This recent string of ACL injuries has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of players in the WSL. The league will likely face pressure to address these concerns and implement measures to prevent future injuries.
Liverpool’s next match is against league leaders Manchester City on Sunday, and they will be hoping to secure a positive result despite the absence of Lundgaard. The club will be hoping for a speedy recovery for their talented midfielder.
