Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have once again sparked headlines, this time regarding their life in the exclusive enclave of Montecito, California. A local resident, Frank McGinity, has shared his experience of living in the same neighborhood as the royal couple, shedding light on the reality of being their neighbor.
McGinity, an 88-year-old veteran of the US Navy, recounted an incident where he attempted to share his films about Montecito’s history with the Sussexes. He was met with a cold reception at the gate of their multi-million-dollar home, with the security guard stating, “They’re not interested.” This wasn’t an isolated incident. McGinity recalled a similar experience when the couple first moved to the area in 2020, where he was told to “Get Off Your Street.”
Despite these experiences, McGinity, like many residents, expressed a sense of neighborly concern for the couple, even offering information about the community. He remarked, “I was trying to be neighborly. If they were interested in the neighbourhood I’ve got a lot of information.” However, McGinity admitted that the couple’s public appearances in Montecito are rare, adding, “We don’t see them very much around here.”
Other neighbors, like Richard Mineards, shared similar sentiments, expressing a sense of anticipation for the couple’s presence in the community. Mineards said, “We’re all waiting for them and gnashing at the bit.” The community is keenly aware of their presence, yet sightings remain infrequent.
The Sussexes’ choice of residence, the Riven Rock Estate, is known for its affluent residents and strong security measures. Barry Maher, a local commentator, highlighted the couple’s decision to move to this “considerably pricier spot” valued at ₹ 116.9 crore (£12 million or $14 million). He also pointed out the couple’s tendency to avoid public appearances, calling their lives a “traveling soap opera.”
The stories shared by Montecito residents paint a picture of a community that is both intrigued and respectful of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, while acknowledging the complexities of their lives and their need for privacy in their luxurious yet secluded setting.
