Living with PCOS: My Journey to Motherhood

The sonographer’s words, ‘I can see lots of cysts on both your ovaries,’ echoed in my mind as I left the clinic. My heart sank. My dream of having a baby, a dream I’d shared with my husband Rob for years, suddenly felt more distant. We had been trying to conceive for seven months after I stopped taking the pill, and the lack of a period, coupled with the new hair growth and weight gain, was a clear indication that something was wrong.

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. The diagnosis came as a shock, but it also brought a sense of relief. Finally, there was an explanation for my irregular periods, the excess hair growth, and the weight gain. While the diagnosis was unsettling, I was determined to take control of my health and explore my options for becoming a mother.

PCOS can make it difficult to conceive naturally due to irregular ovulation or no ovulation at all. It can also increase the risk of miscarriage. It’s a chronic condition, which meant this was something I would have to manage for the rest of my life. But I was determined to stay positive. I started making lifestyle changes, incorporating regular exercise and healthy eating into my routine. I also began taking supplements recommended by my doctor to help regulate my menstrual cycles.

Despite the challenges, my periods returned in August 2023, albeit every two months. As a woman approaching 35, I felt a sense of urgency, as my egg reserve was diminishing and the risks associated with pregnancy were increasing. While I felt hopeful, the reality of potentially needing fertility treatment in the future loomed over me.

My journey with PCOS has taught me the importance of awareness and support for women dealing with this condition. It is incredibly common, affecting 1 in 10 women in the UK, yet it often goes undiagnosed or is not discussed enough. My hope is that sharing my story will empower other women and help them feel less alone.

While PCOS has presented challenges, I am not giving up on my dream of becoming a mother. I believe that with the right support, knowledge, and determination, I can navigate this journey and achieve my goals. I am confident that with the right care and support, I can create a beautiful family with Rob.
