Locals Rush to Aid Stranded Whales on Anzac Day in Western Australia

Anzac Day took an unexpected turn in Western Australia’s South West region when a group of approximately 50 to 100 pilot whales became stranded on Toby’s Inlet beach near Dunsborough. The mass stranding event prompted locals to spring into action, entering the water in an attempt to keep the whales immersed and prevent further distress. News of the stranding quickly spread through social media, with locals using Facebook to call for assistance in returning the whales to deeper water. The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DBCA) immediately dispatched a team of experienced staff and Perth Zoo vets to the scene to assist in the rescue operation. The department emphasized the importance of human safety and animal welfare and urged the public to refrain from attempting rescues without guidance from DBCA officials. Similar incidents have occurred in the area in the past, including a tragic event last year where around 50 pilot whales died off Cheynes Beach in Albany despite valiant efforts from volunteers. The current situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as the rescue operation progresses.
