London City Airport to Expand, Handling Up to 9 Million Passengers Yearly

London City Airport (LCY) is gearing up for a major expansion, paving the way for a significant increase in passenger capacity and enhanced European travel options. Situated to the east of the bustling capital, the airport has secured approval from the Department for Transport to boost its annual passenger handling capacity from 6.5 million to a remarkable 9 million. This expansion signifies a substantial commitment to enhancing accessibility and convenience for travelers seeking seamless connections to European destinations.

The airport’s expansion plan also includes the introduction of three additional early morning flights on weekdays, catering to the demands of early-bird travelers seeking to maximize their time abroad. This strategic move is expected to further simplify travel arrangements, allowing passengers to embark on their journeys with greater flexibility and efficiency.

Despite the significant growth plans, London City Airport maintains its commitment to its existing operating hours. The airport currently operates from 4:45 am to 10 pm on weekdays, 10:45 am to 10 pm on Sundays, and from 4:45 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. While the airport sought permission to extend its Saturday operating hours to 6:30 pm, this request was denied due to concerns related to noise levels.

London City Airport, though relatively small with just 15 gates, has experienced a steady rise in passenger numbers since the pandemic, showcasing its growing popularity. Last year, the airport welcomed 3.4 million passengers, a significant number considering its size. This growth underscores the airport’s strategic location close to central London and its ability to provide a convenient and efficient travel experience.

While London City Airport’s expansion is a positive development, it’s important to note that it remains a smaller airport compared to London’s major international hub, Heathrow Airport (LHR), which handled a staggering 79 million passengers last year. London City Airport offers a diverse range of destinations, serving over 24 locations across the UK and Europe with flights operated by major airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM.

This expansion promises to make London City Airport an even more attractive option for travelers seeking convenient access to various European destinations, further solidifying its position as a key player in London’s vibrant air travel scene.
