London Design Festival Honors Makeup Artist Pat McGrath, Biodesign Innovator Natsai Audrey Chieza, and More

The London Design Festival, known for its annual celebration of excellence in design, has announced the winners of the 2024 London Design Medals. This year’s recipients represent a diverse range of fields, showcasing the breadth and impact of design across various industries.

Pat McGrath

, widely recognized as the world’s most influential and in-demand makeup artist, has been awarded the prestigious London Design Medal. McGrath’s illustrious career spans 25 years, during which she has made significant contributions to the beauty industry. She has created cosmetics for renowned brands like Giorgio Armani, served as global cosmetics creative design director at Procter & Gamble, and held the position of beauty editor-at-large for British Vogue. Her own brand, McGrath Labs, has garnered immense success, solidifying her position as a leading figure in the cosmetics world.

“Design is at the core of everything I do as a makeup artist,” McGrath expressed, “so to have my dedication to design recognized and celebrated with the London Design Medal – and in the city where I got my start, no less – is a complete full-circle moment for me.”

Natsai Audrey Chieza

, founder of Faber Futures and Normal Phenomena of Life, has been awarded the Design Innovation Medal. Faber Futures, a design agency, bridges the gap between design and biotechnology, while Normal Phenomena of Life focuses on creating climate-forward biodesign lifestyle products. Chieza’s work exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary collaboration to address contemporary challenges.

“In a rapidly evolving world interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for making positive change,” Chieza stated. “It demands us to push beyond traditional models, boundaries and expectations.”

Harry Blakiston Houston

, founder of Insulate Ukraine, an initiative to install low-cost triple-glazed temporary polyethylene windows in bomb-damaged homes, has been honored with the Emerging Design Medal. Houston’s innovative solution addresses the critical need for shelter and warmth in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. He humbly deflected the personal recognition, emphasizing the work of those on the ground.

“I see myself as an inventor who uses systems to solve problems,” Houston explained. “When I was told I would be awarded the Emerging Design Medal, I asked if it could go to the people on the ground in Ukraine, the civilians who stayed to help their community. They are putting their lives on the line every single day. I didn’t win this award. They did.”

Rei Kawakubo

, founder of the iconic fashion brands Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Medal. Kawakubo’s revolutionary approach to fashion has challenged conventions and redefined the boundaries of style. Her work has consistently pushed the envelope, inspiring generations of designers and fostering a profound appreciation for avant-garde aesthetics.

The recipients will receive their medals at a ceremony on September 16th as part of the London Design Festival. This event promises to be a captivating celebration of creativity, innovation, and the transformative power of design.
