London Marathon 2023: Record-Breaking Number of Runners Complete Race
Over 53,000 runners crossed the finish line at the 44th London Marathon on Sunday, marking a record turnout for the event. This year’s participation saw a significant increase from the previous edition, where 43,965 runners completed the race.
Among the runners was Peres Jepchirchir, who made history by setting a new world record in the women’s-only category. Her time of two hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds surpassed the previous record held by Mary Keitany since 2017.
The London Marathon is renowned for its fundraising efforts, and this year’s event was no exception. It set a world record as the largest annual one-day fundraising event, with over £67 million raised for various charities. Event director Hugh Brasher remarked that the total would continue to grow, as donations often come in after the event weekend.
The race, which begins in Greenwich Park and culminates on the Mall, saw thousands of participants showcasing their determination. Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao claimed victory in the men’s race, while British runners Emile Cairess and Mahamad Mahamad secured third and fourth place respectively. Both Cairess and Mahamad qualified for the Olympics with their impressive times.
In the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
The 2024 London Marathon has already garnered tremendous interest, with a record 578,000 people entering the ballot, solidifying its status as the world’s most popular marathon.
