As Navratri approaches, Lucknow is gearing up for a sustainable and vibrant celebration. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards enhancing public transport and promoting eco-friendly travel by introducing electric double-decker buses in the city. These state-of-the-art buses are scheduled to hit the streets in early October 2024, offering a unique blend of convenience and sustainability.
The initiative, spearheaded by Lucknow’s transport minister, Daya Shankar Singh, aims to improve daily commuting while simultaneously boosting tourism in the city. The tender process for approximately 100 buses, including these double-decker models, has already been completed. These buses, capable of carrying up to 65 passengers each, will initially operate within Lucknow, with plans to expand the service to other districts across Uttar Pradesh in the future.
For tourists, these double-decker buses offer a unique and enjoyable way to explore Lucknow’s iconic landmarks. From the comfort of the upper deck, passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the city, taking in sights like the Bhool Bhulaiya, Residency, and Lucknow Zoo. A single ticket grants access to these attractions, making sightseeing more convenient and affordable for both locals and visitors.
Beyond the immediate impact on tourism, the government’s long-term vision is to reduce carbon emissions and transition to a more eco-friendly transportation system. To facilitate this shift, over 2,000 charging stations are being established across the city, with locations including petrol stations and bus depots.
The commitment to sustainable transport goes beyond city limits. The government has also announced plans for intercity electric buses, which are expected to be operational for major events like the Kumbh Mela next year. These buses will offer a green and efficient travel option between cities, solidifying Uttar Pradesh’s dedication to sustainable transportation practices.
To make booking easy, tickets for the electric double-decker buses can be purchased online via the UPSRTC website and app or at bus depots in Lucknow. These buses will operate daily from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM, offering an eco-friendly and convenient way to explore the city.
This initiative positions Lucknow as a vibrant and sustainable destination, attracting both residents and tourists alike, while showcasing the city’s commitment to a greener future. With its electric double-decker buses, Lucknow is not only enhancing its transport system but also becoming a model for other cities striving for a sustainable future.
