In a recent incident that highlights the challenges faced by citizens in securing justice, an advocate in Lucknow, Prem Prakash Pandey, had to resort to court intervention to get his helmet theft case registered. The incident occurred on August 17th when Pandey went to the General Post Office (GPO) to send a court notice. While he was there, his black helmet was stolen by unidentified individuals.
Pandey’s initial attempt to file a complaint with the Lucknow Police was met with refusal. Frustrated by the lack of action, Pandey decided to approach the court, which then ordered the Hazratganj police to register the case.
The police, complying with the court order, finally registered an FIR against unidentified individuals under section 305 (theft in a dwelling house, or means of transportation or place of worship, etc) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on Thursday.
The incident has sparked concern about the level of security at the GPO, a government facility located in the state capital. Pandey expressed his disappointment not only with the theft but also with the initial reluctance of the police to take his complaint seriously. He stated that he was forced to move the court due to the system’s inefficiencies.
Following the theft, Pandey has been taking precautions to avoid similar incidents, including limiting his visits to public places like the post office. The GPO, on its part, has taken steps to enhance security measures, including providing CCTV footage to the police and ensuring the monitoring of surveillance cameras.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsive and efficient law enforcement, as well as the need for adequate security measures at public places to safeguard citizens from crime.
