Luis Diaz’s future at Liverpool has been thrown into doubt as the club has yet to initiate contract extension talks with the Colombian winger. Diaz arrived at Anfield from Porto in January 2022 and has established himself as Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice left-winger. However, despite his impressive performances and a contract that runs until the summer of 2027, there are growing concerns about his long-term future on Merseyside.
Two-and-a-half years after his arrival, no negotiations are believed to be underway to extend his stay, and it is reported that Liverpool would consider selling him this summer if an agreement cannot be reached. La Liga champions Barcelona and Ligue 1 leaders PSG are both said to be keeping a close eye on the situation, but it is claimed that the Reds have set a monumental asking price for the 27-year-old.
According to the Colombian outlet El Heraldo, Liverpool will demand at least £102 million for Diaz, and the fee could potentially rise to £123 million. Such a fee would represent Liverpool’s second-most expensive sale of all time, behind only the £142 million that Barcelona agreed for Philippe Coutinho in 2018.
The Catalan giants are still strapped for cash and are unlikely to be able to afford such a fee, despite Diaz’s reported desire to join Barcelona. PSG, on the other hand, would be able to meet Liverpool’s demands, especially with the imminent departure of Kylian Mbappe freeing up over £170 million in yearly wages.
Diaz has had a productive season for Liverpool, scoring 13 goals and assisting four in 46 appearances in all competitions. He has a total of 24 goals and 12 assists in 93 games for the Reds over the past two-and-a-half years, winning the FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and the Community Shield in the process.
However, Diaz may not be the only Liverpool winger to seek pastures new this summer. Mohamed Salah’s contract expires in 2025, and he remains a top target for clubs in Saudi Arabia. Despite the presence of Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota, as well as the return of Fabio Carvalho from his successful loan spell at Hull City, Liverpool will likely need to pursue at least one new wide man if Diaz and/or Salah depart.
Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville has been linked with a move to Anfield, although Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring the Championship Player of the Season. Liverpool have also been long-term admirers of Juventus’ Federico Chiesa, who is set to become a free agent in 2025. West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush are two other reported targets for the Reds.
